MESA, Ariz. – Since its inception in 2017, the DREAM Series has devoted itself to honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. By focusing on Black empowerment in baseball, this initiative coincides beautifully with the celebration of the civil rights icon’s birthday.
This year, the event brought together 80 elite high school athletes from across the nation, along with both current and former Major League Baseball players, all united in the goal of inspiring young Black baseball talents.
Camaraderie and Mentorship
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene holds a special place for this initiative.
Having been part of that very first DREAM Series, Greene understands the profound impact such experiences can have.
For the third consecutive year, he opened his home to welcome the participants for an evening filled with joy, delicious food, and community spirit.
Reflecting on his own journey, Greene shared just how significant the DREAM Series was for him.
He recalls the camaraderie and mentorship that enriched his experience—elements he believes are crucial for aspiring athletes eager to carve out successful careers.
Creating Connections
As the young players arrived at Greene’s residence, an air of enthusiasm filled the space.
Greene greeted each participant warmly, reminiscing about how transformative the DREAM Series had been for him.
The attendees couldn’t help but be impressed by Greene’s sleek McLaren and the delightful spread of soul food prepared by a talented chef team flown in from the White House.
This year’s gathering fostered a laid-back atmosphere, encouraging connections among the participants.
Greene was joined by a panel of notable MLB players, including Reds outfielder Will Benson and Cincinnati legends like Eric Davis, as well as pitchers Simeon Woods Richardson, Justin Dunn, and Andre Jackson.
Their presence added to the enriching experience, allowing the athletes to soak in different perspectives.
The day included plenty of free time for relaxation—watching movies, enjoying music, checking out Greene’s personal gym, and even getting fresh haircuts.
A Lasting Impact
Greene’s goal was to create a vibrant setting where attendees could relax, bond, and engage in open conversations about baseball and life.
He and the other seasoned players encouraged questions and discussions, whether the young athletes sought tips on their game or merely wanted to chat.
A standout moment came when Greene struck up a conversation with RJ Cope, a 2026 Vanderbilt University commit, over a shared passion for art.
Greene was excited to discover Cope’s talent for comic book sketches, illustrating the meaningful bonds forming beyond just baseball.

Greene considers this gathering a fraternity, one that transcends the sport itself.
He is devoted to ensuring that every participant grasps the reality of having champions in their corner—mentors who genuinely care about their growth on and off the field.
He emphasized the importance of these ongoing relationships, reminding the players that their connection to him extends well beyond a single event.
Greene’s vision isn’t solely to help them reach the Major Leagues or secure college placements; he aspires for these young athletes to become the best versions of themselves in every aspect of life.
