Spencer Horwitz, the first baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, is about to enter a period of healing following recent wrist surgery on his right side.
As a result of the procedure, it’s anticipated that he may miss a considerable chunk of spring training.
Trade and Performance Background
Horwitz joined the Pirates last December through a trade with the Cleveland Guardians and now faces a recovery timeline of approximately six to eight weeks.
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington confirmed this prognosis but chose not to offer a specific timeline for when Horwitz might return to the diamond.
At 27, Horwitz had a noteworthy season last year, achieving a .265 batting average while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 40 RBIs over 97 games with the Toronto Blue Jays.
His journey continued after moving to Cleveland, where he was traded again to Pittsburgh in a deal that also included pitcher Luis Ortiz along with two prospects.
Recovery and Team Adjustments
The wrist issue that prompted his surgery isn’t new for Horwitz; the team had knowledge of it at the time of the trade.
However, Cherington explained that recent developments at the end of January necessitated surgery, emphasizing the Pirates’ commitment to Horwitz’s long-term health.
In light of Horwitz’s absence, the Pirates are considering various internal candidates to step in at first base.
Jared Triolo, a utility player, and Darick Hall, who has experience at both first base and designated hitter during his time with the Phillies, emerge as strong options.
Hall had a solid performance last season in Triple-A, knocking in 16 home runs, further adding depth to the team’s first-base plans.
Future Prospects
Meanwhile, outfielder Bryan Reynolds has been showing his versatility by taking ground balls at first during practice.
However, Cherington reassured fans that the team’s primary focus remains on keeping Reynolds aligned with his strength in the outfield.
Additionally, Endy Rodriguez, who is recovering from elbow surgery since last fall, is set to continue his role behind the plate for the time being.
With a spirit of determination, Horwitz looks forward to returning to the field.
During his recovery, the Pirates are ready to band together and keep things rolling!
